Sherlock Holmes

While Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes is not the same as the books I read and loved growing up, the script was witty and intelligent, the plot was gripping and exciting, and the direction was unique and visually stimulating. Should you see this film? Well, it's elementary...yes you should!!

The Day of the Triffids

This banal adaptation of the popular novel is proof that Eddie Izzard should stick to stand-up comedy.

Kung Fu Panda

The best part about Jack Black in an animated film is that we don’t have to see him lolling about in his underwear (see post: Margot at the Wedding).

Open Season 2

Cheap, tacky and tawdry...and that’s just the animation. The script was banal and corny. What waste of time, effort, money and Billy Connolly.

Margot At The Wedding

I hate watching movies that make you feel like you’re on the outside of a conversation that’s supposed to be really funny, but you’re not cool enough to understand it. Margot at the Wedding is one of these films. One glimpse of Jack Black’s naked butt was my cue to turn off this pathetic attempt at an arthouse film.

Bolt

I’ll be honest. I’m not a fan of animated films (much to my wife’s frustration, I’m sure). However, a free ticket to a premiere is a free ticket to a premiere and is not to be sneezed at. I spent the first ten minutes wondering what I got myself into. However, I was pleasantly surprised. The script was clever and engaging (without the crass innuendo that seems to be creeping into children’s films of late) and, dare I say it, funny. Without giving too much away, think The Truman Show for dogs. Check it out. You’ll not be disappointed.

X Files - I Want To Believe

I wanted to believe that this film would reignite my childhood love for the X-Files. I was wrong. Where the television program developed three-dimensional characters and fascinating story lines, I Want to Believe failed to live up to my expectations. The story failed to grab me, and the characters were drab. As for Mulder and Scully, they seemed more like brother and sister than lovers. After waiting for ages to see them hook up, seeing it finally happen was somewhat anti-climactic.
